The Story of the Slasher Poltergeist Triangle Scarf (and how to knit your own!)

The Slasher Poltergeist's non-mirrored double knit didn't come about by chance: but instead as a 'lightbulb-moment' after many trials and tests. The pattern uses the double-double knit to make a truly versatile design, while keeping you on your toes in the knitting process.

The start of the triangle scarf: 

If you were a knit historian, you could trace the beginnings of the scarf to Autumn of 2025, when the Harlequin Shawlette was born. This colourwork pattern uses mosaic knitting to bring the graphic to life. In March, The Slasher Shawlette was introduced in the same mosaic technique, featuring the iconic screaming slasher motif. 

Then, double knitting entered our heads as we looked at colour pairings for Gemini Season back in May, and something clicked for Layla - a project that is basically knitting two scarves at the same time, something that always has you asking 'what's next?', the cast on for the knitter that gets bored easily - the Slasher Poltergeist Triangle Scarf was born.

What even is non-mirrored double knitting??

This triangle scarf doesn't hide its challenge: the non-mirrored double knit technique can seem daunting, especially if you're new to double knit itself. This should not, however, keep you from casting on! Our test knit showed that even those with minimal double knit experience found a rhythm and loved completing their projects.

Get settled in the repeats, but not bored with them:

The slasher face and ghost hand motif does settle into a repeat, as you start to trust your hands to bring the knit to a finish. Seeing the pattern emerge gives you the ultimate push to keep going!

Choosing your yarn and colours:

This pattern is written for our Dashing Fingering yarn, and uses around one 100g skein in each colour. The pattern is very versatile and can be finished in many different weights of yarn.

Yarn choice tips:

  1. Your best bet is to go for non-fluffy yarn in a solid or twisted fibre - this helps the colourwork pattern come through the best. 
  2. When choosing a yarn with a different weight than fingering, make sure to also change your needle size. The best result comes from a knit where the stitches are evenly tight.
