How to choose your Rows Knitwear Off Grid Sweater yarn?

How to choose your Rows Knitwear Off Grid Sweater yarn?

Earlier this year, our lovely sample knitter Rowan finished the beautiful Off Grid Jumper by Rows Knitwear. The sample was made in S/S26 Lucid Dreams colours Noctilucent Cloud, Awoken and Dreamstate.

The sample got a lot of love on Instagram, so we have put together a short guide on how to:

  1. Choose your colourway
  2. Find your base combination
  3. Work out yarn amounts needed for your size

Make your own Off Grid Sweater, for those late nights in the spring chill or the mornings that stay surprisingly crisp.

Choosing Your Colourway

The Off Grid Sweater is knit in a slip stitch rib. The colours A and C swap in the horizontal stripe, while B sticks around to form the vertical slip stitch stripes. Each of the three colours should be different enough from one another, so the stripes don't get lost.

Complimentary Colours and a Mediator

For this swatch, we chose the blue of Okinami, bright yellow of Cheese and the mediator of Smoke. In this method, the two horizontal stripes contrast each other beautifully, while the vertical slip stitch stripes bring the whole look together.

Brights and Darks for a Moody Finish

In this swatch, the hot pink of Fever and light turqoise of Nassau are balanced by the deep and calm of Norah's. This mix creates an interesting friction and a unique FO.

True and Trusted

When in doubt, pick a colour trio that just seems to go in every way. In this case, the red of Dragonberry and the blue of Moon Goddess are held by the grey of Platinum - it simply just works!

What not to do:

Here's a swatch we made early on in the process. This shows how colours B and C have too many similar variegations - the colours get mixed up in the pink sections, and the beautiful rib does not show up as wanted.

Find Your Base Combination

Our original sample is done with holding a strand of Merino Single with Melted Baby Suri, but there are many ways to make gauge.

Solid Only

You'll reach gauge by holding any of our fingering weight yarns triple. This will give you a smooth and crisp stitch pattern.

Soft and Fluffy

You can also reach gauge with only one strand of Melted Baby Suri if you go up 0.5 needle sizes! This will create a super cuddly and flowy fabric.

Best of Both Worlds

Like our original sample, you can use any fingering weight yarn and Melted Baby Suri held together to create the ultimate luxuriously thick and soft jumper.

Yarn to Size

Follow this guide to see how many skeins of yarn you would need for the different sizes.

We hope you find this guide helpful, and can't wait to see your Off Grid Sweaters off the needles!
