Conversation with Friday Knits ✨

Our next Mystery Box collaborator is Australia-based designer and creator Phoebe @friday.knits . Whispered Ties is a quiet symbol of connection, a reminder of how we are all bound to the craft, to one another, and to the winding, personal paths we follow through making. 🧶

Rooted in the familiar rhythms of knitting, the design begins with what is known and comforting. Like a ribbon caught in a soft breeze or a narrow path winding through wild blooms, it invites gentle exploration. Each stitch becomes a flower unfurling.

We asked Phoebe a few questions to get to know her better, both in and out of the yarn world.

Do you remember your first knitting project?

Yes it was a wonky scarf when I was 13. The yarn was blue, the needles were 3.75mm I found in my mum’s stash. My friend taught me the basics and I used library book to teach me the rest!

What is your favourite piece of knitting advice?

Not to take it too seriously. The fact we can make entire garments out of sticks and string is already amazing. It’s a practice, it’s not going to be perfect and the fact it’s been around for years, means that you will never stop learning. Also, learn to read your knitting!

What do you do when you're not knitting or designing patterns?

My other hobbies include gaming, collecting figurines (I blame my trip to Japan) and binge watching shows. But I am also an actor who is forever between jobs. Knitting and designing patterns is the perfect hustle because I can take it with me everywhere.

What is the first step you take when starting a new creative project?

It depends on the project and how the inspiration came. Sometimes I will sketch out an idea and sit with it for a few days, weeks or months, sometimes I will just cast on right away and let the rest sort itself out. Just like knitting, there are no rules.

What are your must-have knitting tools?

A good set of circular needles with all the sizes you need. There is nothing worse than stopping a flow of a project by not having a needle size you don’t have. I imagine this is how WIP’s left over in baskets are born.

What is your favourite fibre to work with?

Merino wool, Airy Baby Alpaca and Suri blends.

The Mystery Box is titled 'Whispered Ties' - what does this mean for you?

For me, Whispered Ties is about connection through technique and time. I wanted to take staple knitting methods, the ones we know and trust, and explore new ways of working them, like quiet echoes of the past carried forward.

Mystery Box Whispered Ties will be available on 26th September, 9pm BST.
