The Pattern

Light, form-fitting, and breathable, the Heligan Dress feels easy to wear on mid temperature days, with a texture that holds the eye without being fussy. Flirty and elegant, the mix of cables and dropped stitches gives it both shape and airiness, offering just the right amount of coverage.

A beginner to intermediate pattern and a perfect introduction to knitting your first cable. It’s the kind of project you can take with you, easy to pick up and put down.

Construction Method

The dress is worked bottom up by first establishing the cable repeats, then working in the round to reach the waist shaping. Decreases are then divided into 4 sections and in each section 2 cables are merged together into 1. Increases and decreases are then continued to shape the bust by decreasing the centre front cable (merging 3 cables into 1), and increasing a single cable over each side of the bust into 2. The central cable then splits off again into 2 cables when shaping the neckline. GSR’s are also used to shape the back and sides, while merging all cables together on each side of the bust ready to work the i-cord straps. 

The dress has been grouped into different sizes due to the cable st/row count.

Construction

Gauge

27.5 sts x 33 rounds for 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) swatch in cable stitch (as seen below) using
4.5mm (US 7) needles and holding 1 strand of reccomended yarn.


To knit a swatch with 3 cables, 4 dropped sts, and 2 edge sts either side:
Please note: the loops between the cables are worked by dropping a column of purl stitches.
This means that while the garment is being worked it will look smaller than it will actually be. This
will also affect your gauge swatch so you should measure the swatch after you have dropped the
stitches. If you want to check the circumference / gauge as you are going along you can drop
the purl sts all the way down the purl column, make your checks then pick up the purl sts from
just the previous row and continue working as normal.

CO 46 sts
Row 1 (WS): purl all sts.
Row 2 (RS): k2, cast off 3, k10, (remember to include the last stitch from the cast off sts), (cast
off 3, k10) to last 3 sts, cast off 3, k2.
Row 3 (WS): p2, (double yo, p10) to last 2 sts, double yo, p2.
Row 4 (RS): k2, (k1, drop second yo, C10F) to last 4 sts, k1, drop the second yo, k2.
Row 5 (WS): p2, (k1, p10) to last 3 sts, k1, p2.
Row 6 (RS): k2, (p1, k10) to last 3 sts, p1, k2.
Repeat Rows 5 and 6 three more times, then Row 5 once more.
Row 14 (RS): k2, p1, (C10F, p1) to last 2 sts, k2.
Rep Rows 5-14 another 3 times or until required length.
Cast off on a knit row: cast off in usual way except drop each purl st and work 3 chain sts in its
place.
