How To Knit A Fade - Dashing Fingering and Kid Mohair Silk

This fade technique is a beautiful way to create smooth, ethereal transitions between colours when holding Dashing Fingering and Kid Mohair Silk together. It works especially well in garments where you want the colours to blend softly across sections.
Layla used this technique to knit the Sweet Tooth Dress in with our A/W24: Celestial Reflections collection

In our fade swatch example we used colours from our S/S25: Wonka Collection:
  • Kid Mohair Silk in Teacup (M1)
  • Dashing Fingering in Teacup (DF2)
  • Kid Mohair Silk in Hoverchoc (M3)
  • Dashing Fingering in Hoverchoc (DF4)
  • Kid Mohair Silk in Bon Bon (M5)
  • Dashing Fingering in Bon Bon (DF6)

Fade Technique Overview

To achieve a seamless fade between colours, follow this two-step process:

Starting with M1 and DF2

Step 1 – Transition Mohair First:

Switch your Kid Mohair Silk to the next colour (M3) in your sequence. Depending on how large the piece you are knitting you can decide on the amount of rows you work.

In the swatch example we just knit 2 rows. To knit the fade for the Sweet Tooth Dress we worked 6 rows while continuing to use the current (DF2) Dashing Fingering colour.

Step 2 – Begin Helical Stripes:

Hold the same mohair yarn throughout these next 8 rows. Start helical stripes using the new mohair (M3) and alternating fingering yarns DF2 and DF4

Row 1: New Mohair (M3) + Next Fingering (DF4)

Row 2: New Mohair (M3) + Current Fingering (DF2)

Repeat Rows 12 three more times (8 rows total)

After Helical Stripes:

Continue knitting with the new mohair and new fingering yarn (Row 2) held together until you’re ready to begin your next fade transition and repeat these steps again with the next colours in the sequence
