Spring Crafting Competition Winners!
The QF Studio has been receiving amazing entries to our Spring Crafting competition for the past month. The prompt was to send in a 'small craft' - be it a one skein project, a quick make or just something tiny.
We were so impressed by the work we received, and had a hard time voting for our favourites. Here are the top three:
3rd Place - Heart Smoke Cig by Tobicrochets (@tobicrochets)
"My small project is a crochet cigarette with smoke coming out of it. The smoke can be bent into any shape of your choice which makes it a solid yet fluid piece at the same time.
This is one of my favourite things about this project as it means the possibilities for it are endless.
This project was inspired by me cosplaying Sanji from One Piece, and he is a romantic character who smokes a lot. Thus, I crocheted the cigarette and made it so the smoke looks like a heart shape as a nod to this character.
I would say the most difficult part for me was figuring out how to make the cigarette with the smoke to make it look realistic and fluid at the same time, but once I figured out how I was going to make it, crocheting the actual piece was very easy.
From start to finish it only took me a few hours to make!"
2nd Place -Torchon Lace Bookmark by James Walker (@londonpatternclub)
"I was first introduced to bobbin lace making about a year ago through London Lace Club, and I picked it up again recently.
I'm quite interested in the relationship between lace making and computing, and I find the process of lace making very soothing.Bookmarks are a common project for beginners, because they’re relatively quick to make and provide plenty of opportunities for practicing different stitch types.
The pattern for this bookmark came from a booklet provided by Mainly Lace, an Essex-based supplier of lace making equipment.
Something I love about lace is the way you can follow the path of each individual thread - and although lace looks very complex, there are only two basic stitches. Once I got going, it was easy to fall into a rhythm - but sometimes I’d notice a mistake made earlier on, and then I’d have to undo my work. Despite that, it was still satisfying to work backwards and figure out what went wrong.
1st Place - 3pm Jasmine Brew by Cleffie (@cleffie_crafts)

"I've been browsing a lot of content from the pottery side of Instagram recently and got really inspired. Some of my favourite pieces were by certain artist(s) that made functional pottery of things that aren't really traditional makes, like purses or Jellycat plushies. From this, I decided to make a functional piece with yarn, the medium I am the most comfortable with.
The teapot I made can have several uses - like a purse - but I've been using it as a yarn bowl. It has a zipper lid, a handle, and a spout to thread the yarn out of. To be honest, this project was really high effort for me since it was something completely out of my comfort zone as an artist who typically makes wearables. But, I love how it turned out in the end and now I've been even more inspired to make mixed media pieces."
