Meet the Makers: Inside Our Design a Colour Winners Creations

Meet the Makers: Inside Our Design a Colour Winners Creations

In 2024, we held a competition asking our customers to design their own yarn colours, and we selected three wonderful winners - two from the Adults category and one from the children's category.

We love yarn that carries stories, colours that mean something beyond the surface. These colour-ways remind us why dyeing is so special,  it’s about connection, memory, and the joy of making.

The colours are a little bit of someone’s world, made to be touched, worked with, and loved. We hope they inspire you to slow down and notice the colours around you

We asked our winners to tell us a bit about their love of yarn and what inspired their colours and we absolutely loved receiving their thoughtful responses. Hearing their stories and memories made this whole project feel even more special.

Cotton Candy Mix, by Noah & Anna

Soft pastels, made with love and family in mind

Anna and her son Noah designed Cotton Candy Mix  together, blending their favourite soft colours into a yarn that feels like a warm hug. Anna has been knitting for years, carrying on family traditions she learned as a child in Poland, now living in sunny Mauritius.

“I learned to knit sitting next to my grandmother. She showed me the basics when I was very young, and I still remember the sweaters she made for me and my sister, they were magical,” Anna tells us.

Cotton Candy grew from Anna’s love of pastels and her son’s favourite shades. It’s a colour that feels gentle and joyful  a reflection of their bond, their creativity, and the simple joy of making something together.

If Cotton Candy were a feeling, it would express the deep love I have for my son and the special, emotional moments we’ve shared while creating it together.

Murky Gem, by Kendal

Dark, quiet, inspired by light and shadows

Kendal’s Murky Gem is a rich, moody colour inspired by little pools of sunlight that are shining through a tree canopy, hitting a cool dark tile.

“I have this faint memory of a crocheted afghan in my great grandmother’s basement, but really, it’s the feeling of light and dark that pulled me in,” Kendal shares her first memory about crochet.

For her, working with yarn is about keeping her hands busy, exploring textures, and feeling grounded. There’s something peaceful in the squish of natural fibres, something comforting about the process itself.

“I hope when people knit with Murky Gem, they notice the subtle shifts in colour and find calm in watching those changes take shape.”

Fizzy Berry, by Jia Hui (Joey)

Bright, playful, full of personality

Jia’s Fizzy Berry is a bold splash of hot pinks and corals, with little pops of yellow. It’s playful and nostalgic, inspired by a childhood where everything had to be pink.

“My grandmother gave me her crochet hooks and leftover yarn, and that’s how it started. My first project was a small cactus with a pink flower, not perfect, but full of heart,” Jia remembers.

Her colour is a celebration of fun and carefree moments, the kind of yarn you want to pick up when you need a burst of energy.

“Knitting and crocheting give me a real sense of accomplishment and calm. I hope Fizzy Berry makes people smile, relax, and enjoy the process, that it feels like a little happy dance for your hands.”

Each of these yarns holds more than just colour, they hold memories, family ties, quiet moments, and joyful bursts of creativity. They remind us that making is not just about the final piece, but about the hands that hold the needles, the stories passed down, and the sparks of imagination that bring a skein to life.

We’re so proud to share these winning colour-ways with you, and we hope that as you knit, crochet, or simply admire them, you feel a connection to the makers, to the moment, and to the magic of making something truly your own.
